Writing towards the end of the 20th century, Ted Hughes spoke of T.S. Eliot as not only “one of the truly great poets” – “the poet of our times” in fact – but also as “a supreme spiritual master”. Not everyone will agree with such astonishing claims but, whether agreeing or disagreeing, let us seize the opportunity, for the space of a few hours, to listen again to the poems, and allow ourselves to be quickened and challenged by their unique genius.
