Module Description

The death of the poem has been heralded for a hundred years; yet it persists. It thrives as prayer. It is the psalm of the body in an ecumenical era. Modern poetry is not pure and simple. It is never sweet or sentimental. Yet it finds the sacred in the secular and the secular in the sacred. Like St. Isaac of Syria in his essay on charity, it loves the world, the flesh, and the devil. Let us pray.

Aidan Matthews: Married with two daughters and three granddaughters, Aidan’s old enough to have served the Latin Mass, but naive enough not to mind the tumult in today’s Church. As a child of the second Vatican council, he and his ageing cohort have been through Christian forms of Captivity and Exodus – and sometimes both at the same time.
