Module Description

For 2,000 years, Christians and others have attempted to grasp the significance of a man who was born, lived and died in a peripheral province of the Roman Empire. Within the Christian Church, Jesus is identified as the incarnate Word of God, through whom all things came into being, and through whom creation is being restored. This module looks at what we can know about the historical figure of Jesus, and at the ways in which thinking about both his identity and his relevance developed in the centuries after his death.

Andrew Pierce has a background in historical theology and is an Assistant Professor in the Irish School of Ecumenics, TCD. He is involved in a variety of ecumenical projects – both grassroots and academic – and is particularly interested in how ideas about, and experiences of, place impact on religious self-understanding.
