Module Description

The details of the spring spirituality programme are as follows:
 Title  ‘Spirituality’ – 4 Topics by 4 Presenters – Mondays – 27th Jan – 12th May
This Module is restricted to Qualifying Persons.

1) Topic: Spirituality and Art
Tutor:   Amanda Dillon
Dates: Monday’s 27 January, and 3, 10 February
About:
These sessions shall explore the role that the visual arts may play in enlivening, inspiring and
sustaining people’s spirituality. How does art speak to the soul and how might we engage with
the arts more consciously? In these lectures we shall look more closely at the spirituality that
may be evident in beloved works of well known artists as well as looking at others that may be
unfamiliar to us. A greater appreciation for the gift of art to our spiritual lives is the aim of this
short course.

2) Topic:   Cloud of Unknowing
Tutor:   Denis Robinson
Dates:   17 February, and 3, 10 March (24 Feb is Midterm)

About: Exploring the Way and the Wisdom of the Cloud of Unknowing in the quest for the experience of God.

“Love has reasons which reason cannot understand.” This quote, from Blaise Pascal, captures the essence of the teachings of the Cloud. This module will explore the stages and practices of spiritual growth and the different ways of knowing and experiencing God, particularly through “the longing dart of love”. It will focus on the means by which one surrenders the mind and ego to get a glimpse of the nature of God, which is the object of contemplation. The teachings of the Cloud form the primary basis our contemporary approach to contemplative prayer such as the Centering Prayer of Thomas Keating and Basil Pennington; and the meditation techniques of John Main.

3) Topic:  Biblical Studies
Tutor:  Sean Goan
Dates: 24, 31 March, and 7 April (17 March is St Patrick’s Day)

Module descriptor to follow

4) Topic:   Finding Meaning in Story (Thursdays)
Tutor:   Colm Hefferon
Dates:   28 April, and 5, 12 May (14 and 21 April are Easter Holidays)

About:

In this fun module we experience stories and characters, sharing creative ideas in small groups, both in role and out of role, using biblical stories and tales / myths from other faith traditions. We delve inside the story and search for what has meaning, both for us individually and as a group.
