This module examines how literature and the arts can feed the spirit; offer inspiration, challenge, hope; invite us to be more creative in our day-to-day living. It traces the ways in which song or story, painting or poem, image and symbol can surprise, or – as Seamus Heaney expressed it – “catch the heart off guard and blow it open.”
Brian Dooney: Works with Age and Opportunity, the leading national development organisation improving the quality of life of people aged 50-100+. He develops and delivers programmes on positive ageing, drawing on the arts as a source of inspiration and hope. Previously, he worked as a lecturer in English and Adult Education in All Hallows College/DCU (2004-2016), presenting a range of modules in relation to Literature, Spirituality & the Arts; Creative Writing; Media & Critical Awareness. He completed his doctorate in Philosophy (English) in TCD in 2009, following an M.Phil. in Anglo-Irish Literature (TCD) and B.A. (Mod) in English and Psychology (TCD).
